How HBS interviews

HBS is one of the schools that run interviews where they have read your application. That page compares the schools that do and says how to prepare.

  • 30 minutes with a member of the MBA Admissions Board who has reviewed your application.
  • On campus, in hub cities, or over Zoom.
  • Within 24 hours of the interview you submit a written reflection.

From HBS’s own site: HBS: application process

From Gabriel Goidel’s experience preparing HBS applicants:

  • No walkthrough of your résumé and no "why HBS". The interview goes straight to your application.
  • It opens with two or three questions about things you wrote: if you volunteered, whether you are still in touch with the organization; if you said you would start a company, what the idea is.
  • After that, the usual interview questions.
  • Straight after the interview, write down in points what you were asked and what you said. The reflection is due within 24 hours, and those notes are what you write it from.
  • For the reflection itself: thanks for the interview, then a paragraph on something you forgot to mention, one on something you would say differently, and one on something from your life you wanted to share.

How it works

  1. Give us your CV, or just type it, and pick your school. Dean asks one consultant's questions, about HBS.
  2. Talk for twenty minutes. No push-to-talk and no script on your side: the interviewer asks, listens, and follows up on what you actually said, which means it will not go exactly as you rehearsed it.
  3. Read the report. Scored against what an experienced interviewer listens for, quoting what you said, with the things to fix first.
The interview screen, mid-question: the question in large type, a live audio waveform, the school and the elapsed time.
The interview itself. It asks, then waits. No push-to-talk, nothing to read from.

Why practice out loud

Reading the questions is not answering them. Most people find out how long their answer actually runs, and how much of it is abstract, the first time they say it to someone who follows up. That is the part a HBS interview tests, and it is the part a list of questions cannot rehearse.

A section of a report: a weak answer quoted from the interview, why it cost the candidate, and a rewritten version built from their own words.
Not just what fell short, but how it could have been said, built from what you already told it.

What it costs

$60 for 3 interviews, or $25 for a single one, charged once in USD. Not a subscription: nothing renews, and there is nothing to cancel. Unused interviews can be refunded within 30 days, and an interview that fails on our side is refunded without you having to ask. The refund policy is the full version and it is short.

Who it is from

Dean runs the interview a Harvard MBA and admissions consultant has spent years giving: the same questions, in the same order, with the same follow-ups when an answer stays abstract. It is software: an interviewer and a written report on your own schedule, not a conversation with a human consultant. How this is worked out.
