Video essays, Kira, and the one-take interview
Recorded, timed, and nobody on the other end. But the questions are the ones a real interviewer asks, which is exactly what you can practice beforehand.
The formats this covers
- Kellogg, Video essay. Two questions after you submit, recorded in your own time.
- Yale SOM, Video questions. Short recorded answers as part of the application.
- INSEAD, Video interview. Recorded questions, taken after the written application.
- MIT Sloan, Video statement. A short recorded introduction.
- Rotman · Ivey · Queen's, Kira Talent. A timed recorded assessment, usually with a practice round first.
Why saying it out loud first is the whole trick
A recorded answer is unforgiving in one specific way: you find out how long it runs, and how much of it is abstract, while it is being recorded. Rehearsing against a real interviewer is how people discover that their résumé walk takes four minutes, or that “I led the project” is the sentence they say instead of what they actually did.
Dean asks the questions these formats ask, follows up where the answer stays general, and writes up what landed and what did not, quoting you, so you can hear it back. See a full sample report.
